Good exposure to hydro electric power plant functioning. Great reservoir view from dam top. Nice weather is a plus point to have a visit.
I walked across the Dam on a foggy, cloudy, rainy day expecting poor to no visibility and very bad views. Well, I was soundly proven wrong! In fact the weather made the Dam and its surroundings appear so much more majestic. Not being able to see either end of the Dam, or the Sacramento river upstream made the whole structure seem so much more colossal. The whole area around the Dam is very peaceful actually, save for the quiet hum of the substation downstream.
Shasta Dam is actually quite a sight. It is one of the largest dams in California (if not the largest I think). If you walk to the middle of the Dam, the view is amazing. Facing the south, you'll see the Sacramento River. If the day is clear, you'll see a great view of Lake Shasta and Mount Shasta to the north. If you're driving through Redding, it's definitely worth the stop.
Great views and a great visitor's center! The visitor's center has an awesome, very unique bathroom with a couch, etc (see pictures).
The history and beauty of this place will keep you visiting time and time again.
